John Smoltz and Tom Glavine would have wet dreams if they had Zito's curve! Zito is not overrated he doesn't miss starts, hasn't been injured, doesn't overcompensate for not having a 95 plus fast ball and knows how to pitch. He's going to have an incredible record by the time he is done pitching and right now he's still young and he still has plenty of years left. So no he is not overrated.

Barry Zito is being paid as an ace, and while he is a top-of-the-rotation pitcher, I don't think of him as a true ace.
He's more of a control artist, and he pitches very smart. He'll work deep into ballgames and keep you in it.
He is NOT a true stopper - a guy who can throw up 7 innings of shutout or 1-run ball.
Players are now viewed in terms of their contract as much as anything else, so a lot of folks are going to call Zito overrated when in reality, as other folks pointed out, he is merely overpaid.
Now if only I had that same problem!

HELL NO...This guy eats up innings, He might be the most Durable picture in the gam dotn have 2 worry about him missing games becasue of stomach flu ankle sprains and has some of the nastiest breaking pitches around. He might not be the number 1 picture in the league but stats change from year 2 year and the year he one Cy young it would have been hard 2 argue he was not the best. As far as overpaid The market changes from year 2 year as well I am sure there is someone at your job thats over paid might do a good job but still over paid if the owners are stupid enought to pay all this money out then let them be stupid

Is he overpaid, sure. Is he overrated, I don't think so. Where you find him being overrated is when people argue is greatness with his Cy Young Award. It's a new year, that was so long ago, it's not applicable. Giant's biggest weakness in the pitching department the past few years was...innings pitched by starters. The rotation was not getting past inning 6 or 7. Zito brings an average ERA, and average strikeout amount, but where he is dominant is 221 innings. He is being paid to better the young staff of the Giants, teach them to take care of themselves, win himself 15 or 16 games, and better the Giants organization for years to come. He will be successful in his venture and will make the Giants better. Let's not pretend he is Johan Santana, he is Barry Zito, and damn good at it.

He's not just overrated, it's also the fact that San Frnacisco went crazy with a contract so huge. If you tell me that this man is a publicity icon it's ok, because the team can make of this contract a great investment, but he's nothing but a nice pitcher, he's not a selling machine if he puts his name on some clothes for selling as team merchandising.
But the second problem is that San Francisco won't resolve the problems they have as a team right now to win that division, with lots of old players.
They could better divide those 120 MM into varios players in some positions, some prospects, or a group of pitchers and outfileders (their biggest weakness)

Your just saying that because he went to the Giants. I think that you should get over the fact that he is gone. He should be inducted in to the Hall Of Fame some day as a Red Sox. So no I do not think that he is overrated. I think that he is a very talented pitcher and will end up with the Red Sox.

He is not overrated and he signed at the going rate. The team(Giants) are not really playoff contenders so many people will say they spent too much. If Giants continue to improve over the next 2 yrs( like the mets did after they signed pedro and beltran) then it will be an excellent deal and he will NOT be overrated.

Maybe a little bit, but no one can deny has has one of the best breaking 12/6 curveballs in the league. This isn't always reflected in his stats either, b/c that pitch drops out and causes hitters to get on top of the ball and ground out. Therefore his K totals are not rival with other upper calibur pitchers. However despite this, I would say he is slightly overvalued, and his SF run will likely be less successful than his oakland stint.

He may do much better in the NL. The pitcher is an easy out most of the times. Without the DH as in the AL he has a shot to excel.
