Poi are those balls on the end of chains or ropes that you swing around. Some people set fire to them.

Poi means Fire! Here in Los Angeles, CA we have Machina Candeo Fire Performance Troupe. www.machinacandeo.com
These fire shows at night Blow Me Away! Ty, the leader came from Arizona where they do the 2 story structure of a man that
is set ablaze after groups perform down in front of it. It then is
referred to as "Burning Man." They use metal fans with tips
ignited, special knotted balls on rope or chains, lit swords &
a hula hoop with 5 fire balls well secured as individuals move
to provocative music. Do not practice with lit objects until you
have been well trained in Poi. Accidents at times happen to the
the very best. For a show, they do dress & look awesome.
That reminds me, Ty, a guy, loves "***** coats." I need to send
him one! After a night show, he only has a leopard short coat.
Be safe and successful!

Poi is an Hawaiian dish of taro root pounded to a paste and often allowed to ferment. Just what it has to do with dancing I have no idea.
