The kids can access my computer and I've noticed that a few programs have appeared on my desktop!! How can I prevent this as the kids have scant disregard for anti-virus software!! My OS is Windows XP.

They must have admin rights to be able to install to your computer.
If you have a network ,they cannot access your computer without a password which you must have given them when you set it up. They dont need to be able to access it for their computers to use the internet through your computer.
When you are not at the computer just blocking all access with your firewall and changing your administrator password would stop the other computers on the internal network from accessing your computer but still enable them to surf from their own computers.
Make sure only one account on your computer is the admin with the new password else they can just go to your computer and reenable the access.
Also set your virus program to scan all downloaded files and scan in realtime, with automatically delete set as the option if a virus is found then if a virus is found it wont let the program install.

The first thing you should looking for, is your computer is on "sharing enabled"? To find out, double click My computer, do you see a hand icon holding your C: drive? If it is, then your computer has been sharing with other computer within your network. So, right click your C:\ drive, select Sharing and Security, if it has the checked mark on "Share this folder on the network", and Share Name box has something in it, delete everything in this box, remove both check boxes, OK to exit.

Your kids might running something called "Remote Desktop Connection" or "Remote Access". This feature allows you to access your home computer from distance, even if you're hundred miles away. I'll show you how to turn this off. Right click My computer, select Properties, select Remote tab, remove the checkmark on "Allow users to connect to this computer". Before you do this, find out who did this, by click on Select Remote User button, you'll see the list of whoever can connnect to your computer, to remove that person, highlight that name, click Remove, then OK, OK to exit.

That should solved your ghostly problem :)

To prevent your kids access to your computer, put a password on your account, by going to your User Account, select Create Password. Whoever is smart, can override your password, but I won't say it here, your kids may see and going to your computer :)

That is probably the least of your problems because it seems that your wireless netowork is unprotected. If some one else found out, they would be able to steal data from you. Password protect you network and change the default password for your router immediately.

You need to create a firewall, and individual loggins, you might have to restrict what they can do and download by setting permissions. Im no techie however read the manual or contact virgin media, and they can advise on the best way forward.
