We went last Nov and again in Feb 07, we found take GB pounds (they love £1 coin as tips) change to local currency in hotel you will get a better rate we did on both occassions. no harm in changing a small amount in to local before you go . One tip, their notes have been around a lon long time they feel like cloth - after handling it make sure you wash your hands as that is where most tummy bugs come from not the food but the germs on the notes!

the banks in sharm will happily change either dollars euros or english pounds and they are not worried which you chooose. But if you have to change your money to say euros and then egyptian pounds you are going to lose out twice. So if you are english take english pounds and change at the bank that gives the best exchange. Some banks charge commision some do not. Either way you will get a better rate of exchange out there than you will there. usually if you change here you will get around 1 EP less on the rate than out there. also if you use an ATM you will still get the good exchange rate though i expect your card will charge for the service
but its usually not a lot. However a word of warning the ATMS are not always reliable. i have known them refuse perfectly good cards, for no obvious reasons. one other thing, try not to come home with any. they say you can change back at the airport i have never managed it yet. get rid of all unless you are going back to egypt

depends on what country you are from. £, $, euro
some people like to make the card companies even richer.
bring this currency with you it is excepted all over Egypt but not coins, they are ok for bakshheesh(tips)or paying the camel boys and the river boys, you need not bother bringing Le with you as it depends on the rate of exchange at time of purchase and it fluctuates a lot, for example i changed 500 £ in england before I came to Egypt at 10 to 1= 5000le
when I got here 1 week later and changed the other 500£ I got almost 6000le , and for a thousand here in egypt (100£)you can pay for the hotel and food. so £.$.euro, change it or use it here.

You can use American dollars nearly everywhere.
I personally prefer to use my ATM card. Then I am not worried about having a lot of money to carry around.
You can just draw the amount you want in L.E.(Egyptian Pounds) every day or so. There are ATM machines for debit and credit cards all over Cairo, and the other cities in Egypt. So long as your card is linked to Visa or Maestro, then you can use any machine,at virtually any bank.
There are only a couple of smaller commercial banks that are not linked to this system.

Take egyptian pounds with you..since some of the small stores would not use the dollar..and these stores usually have the same stuff as other stores but cheaper..Most stores that will use dollars will triple the price of the items....

Best take Euros and US dollars, they like as stable currencies. Also exchange money for Egyptian Pounds in Souk.
Very nice people but beware a lot of pick pockets. Always leave valuables in hotel safe.
Have a great time.

US dollars
Euros

both can be changed easily in Egypt, but you better have Egyptian pounds when you arrive to pay for any services and for the airport

If you are travelling from the UK you can take Sterling travellers cheques because then if you return with any you get face value for them. You can buy Egyptian pounds before you go if you would like some cash on you.
They also except Sterling cash ( not coins ) US dollars and EUROS. so you have a pretty wide choice. Personally I would stick to Sterling if travelling from the UK and US dollars if travelling from the States.
