I couldn't help answering this question because the same happens to me frequently. Actually I've got a general & friendly face (not so bad looking...lol) and people get a feeling of 'Deja Vu' upon meeting me.
There are actually a couple of scenarios when such an incident happens. Here they are:

* At times, when I meet new people they actually call me by some name that is strange to me & warmly greet me. In such cases I humbly listen to them with a nice smile, give them an equally warm handshake, and finally introduce myself to them. Their reaction is interesting when their eyes and/or mouth open with surprise and they respond: sorry I thought you were someone I knew a few years ago. I can't help smiling or laughing for while when this happens.

** On other occasions a certain person would just start staring at me. Now this is very confusing for me if men stare at me (I'm straight). This creates an air of tension between the two of us which sustains itself until it is not resolved through discussion. In general, I take the initiative and ask if I can help. This breaks the ice and the confusion is cleared.

In overall sense such incidents are amusing because they provide a nice/pleasant break to me. I keep recalling them for a few hours or even days. However, if some awkward 'staring' situation arises that feels rather embarrassing to me.
I am an engineer by profession, but it nice to be greeted as a doctor, teacher, artist, or even shop-keeper for a change...:-)

No, sometimes they do know you from somewhere. Maybe it just slipped your mind that you might know them? In the case of someone in another country, that's never been to your country, they might have seen someone who looked like you in a way. In that case, you are familiar to them. So, don't get annoyed, ask them who they are and what circumstances they think they might have saw you before under.

No it doesn't. People often take me for Jack Peterson, the Aussie actor and I've been accused of having a passing resemblance of Chuck Norris. Since these actors are hardly in their prime and not making the movies they used to, peoples' memories get a little furry. But these same people are really nice about it. I see no reason to get upset.

No but it does bother me when I'm compared to Kate Winslet. Everyone said in my high school senior pictures that I looked JUST like her. They also said that about my Junior Prom. In fact my best friend said "You look so.... TITANIC!!" I am not sure why it bother's me, because she's not this overly big celebrity and she's starred in mostly low budget films. Plus she's heavier set than I am, and my hair's not quite as red as hers. I'm sure though being compared to a celebrity wouldn't be as bad if it was someone like Alyssa Milano. :|

I rarely get that, bu on the occasion I do, I prefer thinking of it as a compliment, other people thinking I am either a celebrity or someone they knew in life to have fond memories of to remember them years later.

totally, the book shop lady though i was 4 different people in school. one, a junior, two a senior prefect, three a probee and me. i would walk past her in a minute and later, a look alike girl walks pass her and she though i was in two places at once. last time, my friends got me mixed up with a senior. they would see me in a prefect uniform one day and the next, my normal uniform. then they'll ask why i resign as a prefect. its really annoying

Not if she's good looking and asking.

Good to have a common face that make so many people happy when they see you.
