US support of Israel has been expensive in human costs over the past few decades. Does anyone know the basis of such a commitment and why the US is so willing to go to these lengths to protect Israel?

1. Israel is a democracy in a sea of fascist dictatorships. She is the most diverse society in a region filled with homogeneous cultures. She is the only country in the MidEast which offers the basic freedoms outlined in the First Amendment.

2. Israel is a world leader in the sciences, especially medicine, and on the front line in the global war on terror.

3. Israel had faced four invasions in her first 30 years and won each. The US likes backing a winner.

4. Israel is the only country whose right to exist is questioned, and the whose destruction is openly called for by more nations than any other.

5. Someone has to counter all the anti-Israel bias from the UN and EU.

6. No US soldier or sailor has ever died protecting Israel.

A couple main reasons. Israel is very similar to the US in terms of government, beleifs, etc. In general the Middle East is the most different place from the US that there is. It pays to have a close friend in the area. The middle East is also our largest threat so it helps to have a strong ally and a military staging point in the area if we ever need one. Israel is surrounded by coutries that want to destroy it so they need the help and no other country is willing to make sacrifices to help. The US also feels partly responsible for the Holacost because the US did not enter WWII to try to stop it. The US only entered WWII after Pearl Harbor. We sat idle and watched millions of people be murdered and feel bad now.

Consider three things. America has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. Israel can lobby our government whereas Russia cannot by law. Dual citizenship was first allowed to Israeli citizens while Israel was becoming a country before becoming a more common policy. I've read some estimates we expend $20-22k per Israeli citizen annually in direct and military aid. Baffling, but I opinion these policies will stay in place for a long time to come.

Israel is the one that has paid the heavy price of a human cost. They have been invaded in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 2006 by Arab entities or nations. They are the only real democratic government in the Middle East. We, in the US, have adopted primarily Judeo-Christian principles as a basis of our religion, culture, & society. Israel does have hard decisions to make. They have to accommodate a Palestinian state, but one that would recognize Israel's right to exist. Who wants a Palestinian state who is bent on the destruction of a strong and viable nation of 5.5 million citizens? Who wants a Palestine who is in the midst of a civil war and can't agree on a unity government? The US and Israeli mutual relations are very important because of all of the above mentioned reasons. Israel is the last, best stronghold we have in the region. Many others will disagree, but those are the facts.

Good question and valid answers so far and I agree with them partly. However, I also agree with Jimmy Carter as per his last book, that the US has to show some impartiality if anything is to be accomplished. There has been no progress since the historic Israel-Egypt truce agreement during the Carter administration. and most of US policy and diplomacy since then has been myopic at best and blatant at worst.
The rhetoric has to be recognized for what it is and efforts have to be exerted to bring all parties together, regardless of what they espouse for internal consumption. Hamas was democratically elected, yet we refuse to recognize it, which makes hypocrites out of those who claim they want to "democratize" the Near and Middle East.

The Anglosaxon immigration and occupation of the new continent "America" and later on the ethnic cleansing of the red indians is similar to the exodus of the israelis over the centuries and their settlement in palestine for the second time in history, so maybe Israel gives justification for the americans as to what they have done to the red indians.
