I got my daughter a lovely teddy bear holding a love heart that had LOVE embroided on it. I got one for her to give to the baby and one for the baby to give to her. Different colours of course. Also a doll each, one was larger for the oldest and a little one for the baby. So the dolls were a big sister and a little sister. She loved them. And when the baby was old enough to play with her big sister they loved playing with their sister dolls.

What would you give him for his birthday? Do something similar to that. Something he'd enjoy - like a video, or some special toy. (My friend's daughter LOVES Dora the Explorer, and when my friend had her son, I got her a Dora video to watch - and she would tell the stories from the video to her little brother, as if he asked what was going on. It was cute.)
That's a good idea, so this way, when everyone is fawning over the new baby, the older sibling doesn't feel left out. When I worked directly with patients, I always gave out "Big Brother" or "Big Sister" stickers to older siblings of newborns, because so many people are caught up in the new one, they tend to forget the older ones.

When my little sister was born I stayed with my grandma; and I was a handful waiting to see if mom was okay. She was extremely sick the whole pregnancy and I already didn't like the new baby.
My older sister came to Grams; she had already been to the hospital; and gave me a gift from my new little sister which I still have.
It was a pink card (provided by the hospital) that said -To my big sister-I am your new baby sister (name) and I can't wait to meet you.
It was simple; but I felt better. Thinking that the baby already knew about me; and was excited to be my little sister.
I think any big brother;big sister gift from the baby is great.

I tucked a big box of smarties and a barrel of monkies into the baby's bassinet at the hospital.
The baby is now 3 months old and my toddler still talks about the big box of smarties that her sister gave her.
This was not a sentimental gift of course, but my daughter loves smarties and has never been given an entire box before!
(A side note - I think smarties might not be available in the USA - they are like M & M's, but better - kids love them!)

How about a personalized book? Kids love to hear their name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Ballerina Princess, Sesame Street, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Batman, Spider-Man, Teddy Bear Land, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful & unique gift... Good Luck!

When my stepson (5) first came to visit us at the hospital after my son was born, I had a bag of goodies waiting for him. Some small toys, a few little treats (candy) and a Diego DVD. The toys & treats were to keep him occupied at the hospital (it was summer time and he was there with us all day most of the time). The DVD was to keep him occupied when we got home, since I knew I would be busy with the baby. He still talks about the DVD his baby brother gave him at the hospital.

perhapes a framed pic of the 2 of them together or a card with certificates in them from mom and dad like i daddy give you add toddlers name a free afternoon with me to do your favorite thing or even with mom or something like extra story time if you read to toddler or a trip to zoo or park sometimes when a new little one comes in the house the others can feel left out a little because a new baby takes a lot of time and attention the certificate could even say a trip to the ice cream shop when you want it or those little things like that will help

this is such a great idea!!! What does the toddler like, are they into any tv shows such as Dora The Explorer or anything as something from that would be good, or even just a toy to cuddle like a teddy or something, just make sure that toddler knows it is from baby as this would probably help the bonding process.
