What size are you looking for?
I personaly love English Lops.. they average around 10-20 lbs, are very sociable. And Flemish Giants 15-25 lbs
The most popular are usually Netherland Dwarves and Dwarf Lops/ Holland Lops. I personally don't like them, they are tiny (around 2-5lbs) and sometimes don't have the best attitude around small children.
usually suprisingly enough, the best family bunnies are usually "meat" rabbits.
That includes Californian's and Flemish Giants.
ones you want to avoid
Britannia Petite
Tan
English Spotted
Any "running" breed really
The BEST situation if you want two bunnies is to actually buy a male and female, and have the male neutered (relatively cheap). 2 males will definitly fight. and often 2 females will as well.
When I was breeding and showing I litter box trained all my rabbits, and built them cages out of those square mesh cubes you build cube shelving out of(with the round connecters), and cut plywood for the floors. I made most of them two story on one side as well as rabbits love to jump up and down. It keeps their legs very toned for showing too.

You can go to www.Arba.net to see what breed appeals most to you. You can then search on line for breeders in your area. I wouldn't recommend buying from pet store because they don't exactly know what breed they are selling you. Also some pet stores don't know how to sex rabbits so you aren't guaranteed to get the correct sex.
I wouldn't recommend putting 2 rabbits together in the same cage unless they are litter mates, and even then you run the risk of them fighting. Rabbits aren't social animals so they can live on their own and won't get lonely. I would say if you want a rabbit just get 1 as it would most likely be much happier having you all to itself.

if you're a first time rabbit owner i would start off with one bun until you got the hang of owning one. a great thing to do would be to go to your local animal shelter (this website lists rabbit shelters by state) they can hook you up with a bun that matches your needs and they many be able to get you a already bonded pair of bunnies.
if you go to a shelter and they're welling to separate a pair of bonded buns try looking someplace else. shelters that don't know that bonded bunnies sometimes die from heartbreak after being separated shouldn't be trusted to find you a good bun.
size matters but sometimes mixed rabbits are better then pure-blood buns. like any animal breed doesn't define their behavior, that's like saying all white people are hicks or saying that asians only eat rice. stereotyping a rabbit based on breed will get you no where. a good shelter bun might be just the pet you need.
Another up to adopting a shelter bun is they come spayed or neutered and that will lower vet prices for you plus make living with your bun easier.

I agree, if I were you, I'd start with one until you see how much time you have to spend with the rabbit. If you decide you want another one, I wouldn't keep two rabbits together unless they are BOTH spayed/neutered.
A shelter is an excellent place to start. Or look for a local responsible breeder. (Please do not buy from a pet store. ) Consider personality and adult size (based on the amount of room you can give them.) Don't get two Giants unless you have alot of room for them to play.

Rabbit could grow very fast but you need to be careful because they could easily catch flu. Try Aggorra breed and you would love it. The best option is to have a pair; male and female and their life's span would increase tremendously. Enjoy it!

it depends if you want baby rabbits then you might want a boy and a gril. if you don't want baby rabbits then you should get a friend for the other rabbit. but make sure they are nice to each other or somthing bad might happen to one of of the rabbits.

two females should be fine together. Just be sure they are two females.
Its quite tricky to tell male from female when they are very young. I have always favoured the dwarf rabbit.
