He could be trying to scare you into paying him to install a new system. What was leaking ?gas or warm air?? Call British gas for a second opinion.

There may be an office locally there that supplies grants for disabled people with either private landlords or their own homes, your situation should be an emergency HOWEVER i contacted this local service here for similar as my mum is disabled and needs a shower as she cannot get in the bath properly, after 2 weeks we received a reply saying that a person may visit within the next 17 months wow! now that's fast service, i would get a 2nd opinion on that heating system first and take it from there...good luck.
ps. yes i agree with the lady below too, my mum did get a grant for cavity wall insulation and loft insulation some years ago and i have seen someting about having a new central heating system fitted too somewhere in a leaflet that was sent to her recently.

Hi. I live in rented accommodation and last year I got a grant ot have a full central heating system installed.
The establishment I used are Eaga Partnership (sorry dont have number) you should be able to get number from internet or directory enquiries. It can be a long process so get the ball rolling now. They offer this dependant on circumstances. I got it done as Iam a single mum, I work part-time and receive benefits. So due to being on income support you should have no problems. They will need to contact your landlord to agree to the work, but dont worry your landlord would be crazy to say no. Also your landlord will not be allowed to increase your rent because of the work done. Like I say tho it can be a long process up to year. They will also insulate your loft.
You are entitled to have this work done via a grant.
I didnt even have a gas supply to the house and this was all done and included. Good luck.

first of all this depends what is leaking this fault is almost always repairable.if it is leaking products of combusion (burnt gas) then it sugests a fault with your flue(normally repairable at about a cost of £500)if it is leaking unburnt gas then this can be reapaired at around £140.i would suggest getting a second opinion on this matter and british gas will look at it and if possible repair it for a fixed fee of £140 if no fix is available you will not pay a penny.also if you live in scotland you are eligble for a free heating system from the scottish executive as you are disabled and on benifits as i say get a trusted company to look at it and give you a more proffesional opinion.

Age Concern, WRVS, Good Neighbours Service should all be able to offer sound advice. Possibly even your local Social Services or Volunteer Centre.
In the 21st Century no-one should be left in your predicament if we consider ourselves to be civilised.
Best wishes.
