I shall show you how to decode it with an example, S7877395B.

First, add the products of each digit and a corresponding weight.

Weight of 1st digit = 2
Weight of 2nd digit = 7
Weight of 3rd digit = 6
Weight of 4th digit = 5
Weight of 5th digit = 4
Weight of 6th digit = 3
Weight of 6th digit = 2

7(the digit) * 2 (the weight) =14
8 * 7 = 56
7 * 6 = 42
7 * 5 = 35
3 * 4 = 12
9 * 3 = 27
5 * 2 = 10
--------------
Sum = 196

Next, you divide this sum with 11 and find the remainder.

196 / 11= 17 R 9

Finally, match this remainder with a letter. In this case, it is B.

0 = J
1 = Z
2 = I
3 = H
4 = G
5 = F
6 = E
7 = D
8 = C
9 = B
10=A

This method is also used to calculate ISBNs and car plate numbers, although the weight used is different.
