Hi there, hope that this article about cleaning, mounting & framing cross stitch will help you:
http://members.aol.com/hblossomxs/frame.html
I think it's the transcript of a lecture someone had by an expert on cross stitch.
There's also this one:

Hope these help ... congratulations on nearly reaching the finish!

This is what I do. I sprinkle it with water and too in the dryer for about 3 minutes, then I iron it with the front face down.
I have been cross-stitching for 32 years now, it has always worked. Years ago the fabric was really stiff and I use to soak in a cookie sheet, then I wouldroll it in a towel to remove the excess water, then I would iron it.
I hope this helps you.
Don't forget to put your initials and year on all your work! This add a nice finishing touch!

I always wash mine with warm soapy water (use dish soap-and be sure to rinse well.) Then to dry it, lay it face down on a clean white towel and iron it (only on the back side!) It will look fresh and crisp, and ready to be framed.

I take mine to the drycleaners - find one that has done this before. It only costs a few dollars, and is pressed and lovely looking after!
