The saving is £36. Therefore you want to find what percentage of £59 represents £36. We will call the answer 'X' and use the simple algebra equation as follows:
x divided by 100 times 59 = 36
by multiplying each side of the equation by 100 and then dividing both by 59 you can isolate x as equalling 61%.

23 divided by 59 x 100.
To check, work out roughly in your head what half is, ie fifty percent and then see if that fits. So in this case it's going to be less than fifty percent, and the sum works out as 49.15%, so that looks right!
Sorry the girl above me has done it right, I have worked out the percentage of the price the sale price is, but then all you have to do is minus that from 100 and that gives you the percentage of your saving! So i got 49 and she got 61 so that adds to 100 so that's two ways of doing it!

then divide the original price by 100 =.59
then divide 36 by .59 =61.02 which is your percentage

you can use cross multiplication to figure out the percentage
59/100 (ie 59 pounds is 100% of the price) X 23/x (the new price and the unknown %). Now cross multiply. you get 59x= 2300 divide by 59 and you get x=38.98 so you have paid 39.98% of the original price. You paid 39.98% of the original price, this means your savings was 60.02%

take the discounted price 23 and divide it by 59 to get: 0.3898305084745762711864406779661
take that figure and subtract it from 1
1-0.3898305084745762711864406779661 = 0.610169491525423728813559322034
61% discount, very nice.

move the decimal point 1 place to the left to find 10% of anything and 2 places to find 1%...then multiply by what you are trying to find.....ie. 10% of 75. is 7.5 so 1% is .75 so 27% of 75 is equal to .75x 27 (or 1% x 27)
