Certainly. Even if you have an UPS to protect, it's won't be totally protected, but only to somewhat. It's always better and wise to disconnect your power cord, telephone (dial-up) from the wall that connecting to the computer whenver you have thunderstorm or lightnings. UPS won't protect you 100%.

Any piece of equipment that is plugged into an electrical outlet can be affected by lightning, Lightning has over one million volts, your house wiring is either 110 or 220 depending on which country you live in. I have replaced many motherboards and power supplies due to lightning, and those were from indirect (miles away on the power grid) strikes.

Hi there

They still could if they are connected to the internet as the connection is partly external. Some of the wriing will be outside your premises. Lightening could strike these cables and send very high voltages down your cables. The best thing is to disconnect during an electrical storm.

yes they can
but a lot of power supplys shut down immediatly when over volted like that
but who knows it could still fry evorything
just in case buy a hefty surge protector and ur all set
