A lot of it was very real. Of course there is really a lot of Hollywood there too. I have visited and read a lot about the culture because I find it interesting. So, yes. Their strict religious
beliefs and their aversion to violence and mingling with people who don't believe as they do is real. They have let down some of their strict beliefs in the past few generations because they have to live. Many now have electricity where they didn't before they even have a few cars and they sell their wares to the public. We went to Lancaster, PA and I have pics. of them in the fields with work horses and carts and women right out there working along with their men. It was sooo peaceful and relaxing to be around such simplicity. Really it was.

I am married to an ex-Hutterite and they are very similar to the Amish, might I add, I have Mennonite friends that use to be Amish but left and joined the Mennonites. Trust me, they are people just like us with the same sorts of problems in life. Also their teenagers are just like any others except a little more disciplined. Although I have not seen "Witness" I am sure if it is about life of the Amish with problems, it is most likely true.
