IQ Scores & Ratings
What is a good IQ score? What is a high IQ score? What is a low IQ score? These are common questions, particularly after someone finds out their score from an IQ test.
Lewis Terman (1916) developed the original notion of IQ and proposed this scale for classifying IQ scores:
*
Over 140 - Genius or near genius
*
120 - 140 - Very superior intelligence
*
110 - 119 - Superior intelligence
*
90 - 109 - Normal or average intelligence
*
80 - 89 - Dullness
*
70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency
*
Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness
Normal Distribution & IQ Scores
The properties of the normal distribution apply to IQ scores:
*
50% of IQ scores fall between 90 and 110
*
70% of IQ scores fall between 85 and 115
*
95% of IQ scores fall between 70 and 130
*
99.5% of IQ scores fall between 60 and 140

Genius is a subjective word and only loosely related to IQ. The terms genius, smart, stupid, and idiot are usually subjective observations of performance. The person that invented your favorite device may be considered a genius in your opinion, just as the person that cut you off in traffic may be an idiot. If a lot of people consider a persona genius, they are often considered as such, but it has very little correlation with IQ.
IQ points are measured by distance from normal (100) by standard deviations which are given a point value. If you are one standard deviation above average that value is added to 100, or subtracted if you are that far below normal. Usually a standard deviation equates to 15 points of IQ, so having an IQ of 130 would place you in the top 2.1% of the population.
It should also be noted that people with IQ's over 140 tend to not be as successful as those in the 130-140 range (except in very complicated professions where it might go as high as 145 or 150), and therefore less likely to be considered a genius, due to the fact that they have difficulty relating to enough people to share their ideas which only increases for those with IQ's even greater. Failure to communicate can lead to an inability to accept data not collected personally which can lead to very intelligent people with very poor skill sets.

A genius is not neccerarily intelligent....
IQ only measures your intelligent quotient.
