There are many different methods of animation.
Some, like the Simpsons, have each frame hand drawn and photographed. These are then replayed at normal speed to give the illusion of movement.
Toy Story was created completely on computer, the artist creates the character and tells the computer how the character will move.
There's also stop-gap animation where the real world (or models) are moved slightly and photographed - these can then be played back at full speed.

Hello Lexi,
There are mainly, two kinds of animations, 2D and 3D; excluding flash animated objects.
In 2D animation, pictures are actually drawn and then inserted into computer[using specific programs like Toon-boom].
3D animations are mainly done in computers, using softwares such as Maya, Reallusion, or a freeware program like anim8or. You need to have a thorough knowledge to do this.
Flash, the latest which can be used by pros and ametuers is the best solution for a quick animation. They provide both building material and user guides. [ yea, its a bit expensive]
As you must have noticed this is just a basic explanation. If you want to know more. Do contact me.

Frame by frame drawings put together, in which the characters or objects move slightly each frame.
3D animations are made by using the same technique, except to get them to look 3D, they use a certain program called Cinema 4D.

well old videos are made from a TON of frames/pictures that are taken/drawn in close sequence. I dont know how digital works. also theres such a thing as claymations, they take clay and make models and take a pic, move it slightly, take a pic, etc, this is a very long proccess.
