There is 2 reasons for this.

1). With all the weight from the uterus, it puts a lot of pressure on a major artery running from right behind the baby.

2). In later stages of pregnancy it encourages the baby to lay in the wrong position ready for delivery.

The general rule of thumb is is to lay on either your sides with a pillow between your knees. The pillow then stops you from pulling your back out and also stops any posibility of hurting you pubic bone which is softer during pregnancy anyway.

I've read that if you lay on your back the baby could be cutting off its supply of blood from you by lying on blood vessels. After laying on my back during my pregnancy, I would occasionally stand up and feel lightheaded and sometimes "see stars" so the baby could be cutting off an important supply of blood for you. Also, towards the end of my pregnancy it became very uncomfortable because I could feel the baby lying on my organs. Its sort of like having a very overweight cat lie on you.

I think this is because the pressing in a certain area causes you to pass out, i thought I slept well in my last pregnancy till I read this in a book. I still do at 23weeks not all night but often, i'm probaly stopping my oxygen levels the more I think about it!! Anything for a decent nights sleep if your propped up slightly this must be different as way you sit.

Hi there honey. I just wanted to tell you that you can lie on your back as long as it is still comfortable for you to do so. As your pregnancy progresses you will eventually get to a point where it is no long comfortable to lie flat on your back because of the pressure of the developing baby. When that happens you will find a comfortable way to lie curled up a bit, on your side. When that is no longer comfortable it means it is time to get that little "guy" otta there!
Until that time do what feels good.
Love and Blessings

Your body will normally let you know what is the most comfortable sleeping position. Standard pregnancy advice is that after the fourth month back sleeping should be avoided, since lying on your back puts the whole weight of your uterus on the major blood vessels that lay to the right of your spine. Since some women find themselves unable to sleep on their left side, the advice to avoid both back and right side lying is distressing for them. There is a theoretical advantage to sleeping on your left side, as it enhances circulation to the placenta. For women with placental problems the advice to sleep on their left side only is of utmost importance. However, most women move around during the course of the night and probably whatever position is comfortable for you is all right. Realistically, by the time you should not be sleeping on your stomach, you will find it is very uncomfortable to sleep on your stomach; and by the time you should not be sleeping on your back, you will find it is very uncomfortable to sleep on your back.

When you lie flat on your back, it puts pressure on the developing fetus, specially during the last trimester. the center of ur gravity is at your solar plexus, so the best position is lying on ur left side, as this boosts circulation to the legs (which suffer greatly during pregnancy due to the added 20-30 pound load) and also enhances digestion

The weight of yout uterus and the baby presses on the major abdominal blood vessels the vena cava and can make you feel faint.
I never had this problem and could happily lay flat. It won't harm you just see how you feel.

Never heard of that one!!
I lay on my back in both of my pregnancies...no problems. Found it really comfy snugling into a pillow on my side.

i think that comment is for the later stages of pregnancy when the baby starts to get heavy.

there is a nerve by your spine which the baby can press on, not sure exactly what it does but i heard it on a baby programme.
