I personally reckon you should choose a country, such as Spain, or Italy, France, etc...

Then choose the city or cities (for example, in Spain maybe Madrid with day trips to Salamanca, Toledo, Segovia etc or Granada, Cordoba, Seville) then look on the internet for reasonable accomodation

I think you should book your flights as early as possible with a budget airline like Vueling, Ryanair, BMI Baby, or Easyjet through SkyScanner.net then you will have more money to spend on a decent hotel ...

I use Hostelworld.Com for hostels and cheap b&b places, or interhotel.com and hotels.com for hotels...

hope that helps

Philip

About Greece, I would suggest that you spend 2-3 days in Athens, to see the monuments, and then be off on an island. I would suggest Sifnos (but not in the port, prefer the towns Apollonia or Artemonas), you will love it, or Milos, or Syros. You can check out accommodation on the internet for those places and choose prices etc. They are usually called "rooms", "studios" etc, not cottages though in Greece. By the way, i love the lake district! Prefer to come to Greece in June or July. August is too crowded and May the sea is still cold.

I would recommend Lefkas island(Ionian sea) in Greece!
It is very beautiful, with amazing beaches (most of them have won awards and they maintain the ''blue flag'' the last years.
Here you can find everything.Seas ,mountains, waterfalls, history, small quiet fishing villages(and mountain ones)big enough towns for shopping ,nightlife, amusement. Also many events are taking place during the summer, like folklore festival, wine fests ,sardines fests also traditional Lefkadian wedding come alive and many many things.
Another privilege that Lefkas has is the quality(in all levels) in accordance with good prices and in case of food with quantity as well.
You can fly to Aktio(1/2 hour away from the island) and then drive to Lefkas, another unique privilege that the island holds!
Best period May,June and September.Warm sea not that crowd the services better.
Hospitable and friendly as they are the locals will welcome you with wine and ''salami'',traditional local products and any kind of treats.
You are have a great time I can assure you for that. And don't forget to visit SIVOTA if you come!

p.s.You can also visit the web sides:

Try www.tripavisor .com
You get reviews of destinations from all over the world from the punters not the agents plus you can pick up some very good deals.
Ignore the comments from the people who complain they cant afford to go on one holiday a year,at your age i bet you have worked hard for the opportunity to do this.
go for it have a good time

Just make sure that when the turn of your Greek get-away comes it is NOT in August. Unless you are into the very busy type of socializing that is an unavoidable consequence of August travel.
