Depending on the time of evening yhou were probably still seeing Sirius the Dog Star. (still seen in the west early evening). Venus would have set withing a half hour of the sun, the north star is in completely (almost) opposite direction.

Venus is very bright and always close to the Sun; the North Star is faint and always at the North Pole... I don't see how you can confuse them !

Which direction were you facing? If it was north, then it could have been the north star, if it was west it could have been Venus.

I don't think that it was Venus coz you can see venus only in dawn or dusk, not at night....
