Check with your local Department of Health and Human Services. Depending on your financial situation, your family may qualify for foodstamps and your children may qualify for your state's Medicaid program (in my state, children under 21 get free medical, dental, and Rx medications as well as psychiatric care and hospitalization). See if you can get unemployment checks from the government and call your creditors immediately to let them know of your financial situation. See if they can work out lower monthly payments with you (which would be easier to meet) and (most importantly) call to request lower interest rates. If a customer service representative says that they cannot authorize the rate reduction, ask to speak with a manager.
If you have credit card debt, call these companies first. Many will be willing to work with you and, if not (and depending on your credit score), threaten to transfer your balance to a 0% APR card (if you've been getting offers in the mail) and they should lower your rates.
If you end up transferring, keep the old card and make new purchases on that because other purchases tend to be at full APR and it's "lowest interest first" that your money goes to when paying a bill.
I wish you the best of luck... I've had friends lose their jobs and it's taken some several months (one almost a year), but if you're open to taking a less-glamorous job to help make ends meet until you land a job in your field, take it! In some cases, waitresses can make a decent living off of tips, depending on the restaurant.

Firstly, don't think about debt consolidation, loans or anything they will land you in more debt and it will be a downward spiral.
I am going to assume you are UK, you have a right as a single parent to certain benefits also to housing if this is a problem. You need to go to the citizens advice bureau and the job centre first off to ensure you are receiving the relevant benefits.
After you have sorted your initial circumstances you need to get a new job, what is your skills base, can you obtain an interim job, how old is your child?
If you need to review your financial situation you need to determine what you can sell an where you can make savings to reduce your debt.
good luck

Immediately get an appointment with your local Dept of Social Services. They have services you may immediately qualify for. For instance, you may qualify for subsidized child care and food assistance. Do not be put off by a worker who may seem uncaring, nosy or rude. They have tremendously high case loads and for a while, you may only be considered a number. Cross that bridge, think about the system temporarily assisting you with your family needs, and you'll survive.
Also go to your local Employment Security Commission for employment opportunities, as well as local temp agencies.
