How about the Internet?
It was originally designed for military applications by the U.S. government, but information security protocols now basically prohibit it from being used for that purpose, and U.S. military communications are largely confined to a separate, independent network (though there are exceptions). So, it is no longer used (at least primarily) for its original function, but it certainly provides many other functions and contains much information.
