Yes I know, a waste of a question. But I am serious. Gargamel was perceived as being a human, and the smurfs came up to just below his knees. I have also heard that there is a mushroom land just for smurfs and smurf lovers.

I don't think even the artist know. I remember the 3 apples high thing too, but how can the live in mushroom houses? Gargamel would often hold many in one hand. I don't know about you but I can't hold to many apples @ one time.

I was a big big big smurf fan when i was a kid and as I understand it...the actual size of a smurf was about 3 apples high.
I don't think the proportions of the animation was very accurate though

i remember Gargamel picking them up in his fingers and they looked to be only a few inches high, so maybe they are the same size as the Littles or Brownies or Borrowers

originally they were said to be 3 apples high..so you figure between 6 to 9 inches tall.
