1) Disconnect -ve first, because if you start on the +ve and slip and touch any metal on the car, you will short the battery (big sparks, heat, spanner melts, burns hands, etc).

2) But before touching the -ve terminal, make sure the +ve is covered so you can't slip and short out the battery with the spanner.

3) Once the terminals are disconnected, the charger can be applied. Connect leads before switching on.

4) During charging, be aware that explosive hydrogen gas is given off. There must be no smoking or naked flames near the battery. Keep the area well ventilated.

5) Once charged, switch off the charger and disconnect the leads.

6) Attach the +ve car lead first and secure in position. Ensure it is covered then attach the -ve lead.

If you need to remove the battery from the car, then there are other considerations such as manual handling, no naked flames throughout, care not to drop or damage. Be aware that the battery contains sulphuric acid that is extremely corrosive and must not be touched with bare skin.

I suggest that you check the water levels in the battery before charging. MAKE SURE you are wearing safety glasses before you pop the covers off.

If you are using a battery charger, then connect the charger to the battery Before plugging it in. Also, when it is fully charged, unplug the charger from the wall before disconnecting the wires.
