I have a close friend who cannot take anything seriously. I consider myself an optimist, so it isn't because I am serious all of the time. But, even in normal conversation he makes jokes about almost everything discussed, sometimes it's a bit patronising as it trivialises and dismisses what I have said. It's driving me to distraction!

The kind that mistakes jokes with good humour. Some also mistakenly think that making a joke about everything make them stand out in a crowd & the center of attention. A real funny guy knows when & how to be funny in the right environment or situation, & when to be serious.

I get this same reaction from women all the time. I take nothing to seriously and have a low threshold for laughter.

I have a casual girlfriend that says the same thing to me. I have gone through allot of spiritual growth in my life that most have not. She is not aware of my past so she doesn't understand where I am coming from. When you finally learn most of what we experience in life is a self-done to self thing you tend to lighten up about a great many things. Everything I say or my responses she says she doesn't understand. I explain to her I don't have the same attachments to things in life as she.

Like for instance my mother died 3 years ago and she thinks I am cold because I don't show any remorse. She had a cat to die some years back and she still feels the loss. I tell her I only remember what was good about my mother and nothing else. I asked her why couldn’t she just feel good about her memories about her cat and let go of the mournful emotions? She gets upset because I don't feel her loss. I ask her should I get upset with her for not feeling my joy from the past memories?

She sees my reactions sometimes as being patronizing and trivializing or dismisses what she has said. Nothing is further from the truth. I say to her your emotions are yours and mine are mine. Why is it necessary for me to act like her to feel empathetic?

She is so quick to judge and criticize others like she does my actions and reactions.

Some people just like to be the center of all attention. Or use humor to cover up their insecurities. But many are just ignorant and self centered. They just dont know when to shut up, or that hey just are not being funny. my son does that alot. Especially when he is uncomfortable in some situation. He is insecure about people not accepting him, so he over does it quite often. And he has no tact and doesn't understand that some behaviors are simply annoying rather than funny. of course I think that he likes to annoy people, to him thats funny.

It sounds to me like your friend doesn't know how to respond to anything serious so he turns it all into a joke so he doesn't have to deal with anything.
