Quite often , this means that your AntiVirus was attacked by a new virus that damaged it.
I would re-install the Anti Virus, Reboot the computer into Safe mode and manually run the anti virus to let it check for virus.
Run Anti-Spyware as well that might find a few things.
Keep in mind, that the virus comes first, than the Anti-Virus protection is updated to keep up with the viruses out there, it sounds like you lost the race this time :-(
