From what I've been able to find out Yahoo's official position is that top contributors are knowledgeable in a specific category. Yet you see some with less than a 10% best answer rating, and others with a phenominal 70%+ best answer rating (That's what I would like to know how to achieve).
Based on this and from my reading of several of the top contributors answers I believe that one must answer a majority of questions in a single category, and regardless of whether or not they are good answers, you will become a top contributor in that category. So stick with one single category for your answers, and if you stay with it long enough you may too become a "top contributor"

This Top Contributor is new to me also. Guess I will just keep answering questions and see where I get. I like to answer questions in three or four different categories. Maybe I will try to stick with one or two for a while. Best of luck. Bye.

you have to have a certain amount of points that's all
not sure how many but its not thrilling!
I think people can still make you a fan & you may be able to click on someone & make them a fan
I'm not sure as yet because I havent made anyone a fan yet
but if you go to your profile you will be able to work out about the fan
you will get an email if you are made a fan
edit
i just checked & your score is higher than boofies
so they have just forgot you & it will probably fix itself up somehow in a short time

I've been giving weird answers to strange questions for about six weeks, and today they gave me a badge for it. I think mine was given out of pity.
