Voltron is the answer. They also did a later more futuristic version that was not as good. And they also got rid of the lions as the robots.

It was an old Japanese anime that was brought to the US a few decades back and changed a lot as was normal for those times . . . in the US it was called 'Voltron,' the Japanese name was something different but I can't rememberi it.
