I'm not sure if a lack of sleep directly cause weight gain, but other side factors such as frequent eating when awake longer can be a factor. When you sleep, your metabolism kicks into high gear, making you to process food through your digestive tract quicker, which is why you feel so hungry in the morning and even sometimes after a light breakfast, because you're body is trying to catch up with the metabolic needs utilized during your sleep cycle. But as for sleeping directly related to weight gain or loss, I havn't heard of before. Hope this helps!

Dr James Maas, Cornell University, is one of the pioneers in Sleep Research and has drawn a correlation between sleep deprivation and weight gain - the body releases certain chemicals into the body that cause the body to gain weight.
Also, along the same topic - when in the day you eat certain foods plays a significant role in weight gain as well. Remember that the body metabolism is at an all time low during the night, so avoid fats and sugars in the evening hours.

More than one question there, but as to your main one, there have been recent studies that suggest a link between poor sleep and weight gain. Probably has something to do with an imbalance between serotonin and cortisol levels. Don't know your age, but if you are around 40 or higher, you might want to try Melatonin. Our melatonin levels tend to drop after age 40. You could give it a try if you are younger, but it is not as likely to help you. No harm in trying though. I have used ear plugs for many years, but if you can't, have you considered a white noise machine or a fan running in your room?

Each person needs a specific amount of sleep and I seriously doubt that more or less has a lot to do with weight loss unless you are sleeping too much and not getting enough exercise. There should be moderation in all things and you definitely should not eat any large amount of food prior to going to sleep. It is known that eating large meals and going to sleep is definitely harmful.

When the human body gets enough rest, it has the energy to do what is needed when it is awake. With proper food intake. When the body is lacking in rest that it needs, the way the human body gets the energy it is lacking from not getting sufficient rest, is to take in more calories to make up for it. Take care.

This is purely an uneducated guess, but basically any disruption to your body's schedule and system can effect your metabolism.
Sleep is, obviously, a necessary and integral part of the body's system so when you severely increase or decrease it its gonna through the body's sytems out of whack, including the metabolism.
I know nearly every diet out there discusses a regular schedule of meals/snacks is key to keeping the metabolism working at its best efficiency and if you are sleep deprived this is probally gonna throw your eating schedule out of whack as well

The Prof has given some excellent reasons and, oddly enough, apparently we burn more calories sleeping than we do whilst we are sat watching TV...
