I finally watched the remake the other night and my thoughts on it were that the special effects were much better in the new movie vs the original movie....but the characters in the original movie were more realistic and deep, I think. I didnt find myself at all attached to the main characters in the remake. I find movies disappointing if you cant identify with the actors at some point during the 2 hrs they are on the screen.

I didn't see the remake (I hate re-makes) so I don't know if it was changed from the original. The older version was wonderful with great actors - Gene Hackman, Shelly Winters, Carol Lindley, Red Buttons, Roddy McDowell, etc.
Reaction? It was a disaster movie and a very powerful one at that! Even tho' it was a terrific movie, I found it somewhat depressing because you came to know the characters and care about them and to see them die, etc. it was emotional. That's how the older movies were written, not like the movies today where you get a "glimpse" of the actor's character. If they die or get killed, who cares...

I actually thought it was a decent flick. I didn't see any reason for them to have made it - and they probably felt the same after it bombed at the box office. It's certainly not the best movie ever made, but it certainly is worth renting or catching on cable.

the new one was good, better spec effects, and it wasn't very different from the original but i still liked the original better, as for my reaction: its sad so many people died because they listened to the advice of an authority figure (thats what you're supposed to do) but even if they hadn't they probably still wouldn't have made it because of the obstacles along the way

Emotions are built up on the first scenes and reached it's peak when the ship capsized. After that, everything seems predictable; as to will die and be left behind.
Not as exciting as l expected it to be.

i think the coast guards should have been a little faster
