The Seattle Metropolitans was an ice hockey team based in Seattle, Washington which played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association from 1915 to 1924.
They won the Stanley Cup in 1917, becoming the first United States team to do so. This was before the formation of the NHL.
Seattle is a northern US city. If places like Nashville, Tampa and Carolina can have hockey teams, why not Seattle?
There is about a million more people in Greater Seattle than Greater Vancouver.

I don't think Seattle or Portland will be a major player in the drama surrounding the Penguins. I think its down to just two cities at this point, Pittsburgh and Kansas City. Where they will end up is anyone's guess.
But Seattle and Portland might be contenders for expansion franchises somewhere down the road. While I know there are some traditionalist that think they should only add teams back to the Canadian markets the Peg, I can't see that happening. The league will follow the money and because of that, Kansas City (or Pittsburgh if the Pens actually move), Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Houston all present better options for expansion or relocation.

Portland, OR would be a more fitting destination given that the Rose Garden (home of the NBS Trail Blazers) is a hockey-equipped venue. Furthermore, unlike Seattle, the NHL will not be competing with the NFL and MLB to secure those precious entertainment dollars.
Unfortunately, the issues of major league support that hurt Seattle's NHL prospects exist in Portland as well . A winterhawk ticket is not the same as a costly family outing to watch an NHL team compete.
Lastly, Portland junior league fans seem entirely content and satisfied with the product they are being offered and an NHL franchise would be competing with that factor for several years before acceptance.

I have heard this question posed elsewhere. I understand that Bettman is looking to add a couple of expansion teams and several cities are vying for a team. The cities I have heard looking for teams are Kansas City, which may get the Pens if no agreement can be reached with the city of Pittsburg. Other cities looking are Houston, Portland and Las Vegas. There may be more. Check The Hockey News site, they may have info on expansion teams if that becomes a reality. I think several things have to happen before they consider any expansion and will probably only add two teams. I have heard Seattle has a long history with hockey and at one time had a major league team. Hope this helps.

I live in Seattle and would be all for it. Here comes the but. I dont think the NHL will move to the area any time soon. For one there is no place for them to play and with all the money that looks to be going to the viaduct, and possible plans to expand the 520 bridge I dont think any one in the city council will bring anything in suport of the idea. Also I dont think the public is quite ready for it here. Suporting two junior hockey teams is a bit different than a major NHL team. Also there is no way the people will vote for it. We didnt even aprove the Mariners stadium. I wish we would get a team, but dont see it happening.

I personally believe it can be put on the debate table. At first glance Seattle doesn't sound like a very good hockey city. Second, the NHL probably won't because they have enough teams in the league. Maybe someone can call Bettman or someone and convince them to move the penguins to seattle just maybe a different name. Seattle Penguins?

I certainly hope so I've always said that the NHL needs to put Hockey franchises in places where the fan base is strongest, not 2 in FLA,1 in Arizona,3 in CAL.1 in Texas. What about Washington ,Wisconsin,Nebraska,Oregon,Etc...I hope for Hockey's sake they do.

No the NHL is already flooded with low market cities, why add another? If Bettman even thinks of expansion again hes a bigger moron than we are all lead to believe.

If the Pens have to move (which I'd rather not see), I would prefer there than Las Vegas. Imagine the rivalry that would occur with Vancouver!
