Erm...I think he might be a quack. No one can tell that.
Maybe he's just trying to estimate because your fetus is bigger than some fetuses by 36 weeks.

Well they go by past experiences with other patients...how big they were when they were that far along and how big the baby came out to be when it was born....I don't think the doctor really knows for sure, It's pretty much a guess based upon the experience of other patients.....I had a doc guess the weight of my baby once and he was wrong...they ended up doing this scan and induced my labor cause the baby was so big and she was hurting me bad!!! dont believe everything the doctors say!When i was pregnant with my son,the doctor said he would be the same weight as my daugher (6lb) when she was born.My son was 8LB 15 and a half oz!I dont know how they can judge a baby;s weight just by feeling with their hands.They can guess the length as the can feel where the baby's head and feet are and measure using those but to say they know they know the weight is a load of rubbish.

hmm..im not exactly sure...alot that has to do with the babies weight..is how much weight you gained...b/c i gained a nice amount of weight..and some how that makes babies big..hes measuring 2 weeks early then what he should be...but im just as puzzled as you are..i thought a scan would tell you..not by a doctor feeling you tummy

He probably has a feel for it by now. An educated guess I imagine. I'm a chef and can tell how much something will weigh pretty accurately by just feeling it because I have weighed and held many things and gotten a feel for it.

the doctor has obviously delivered a lot of children and is good enough not to have to scan to tell certain things, be happy about it, you obviously have a very good doctor

they told me the same thing, my baby was 7 pounds, they judge by the size of the head which was always inaccurate for all 5 of my kids.

he feels for baby's head baby's bum for how long baby's legs are etc does some "from experience" math in his head and there u have it...........he might not be totally accurate....its really cool u should have him show you how to tell whats what in ur belly...my midwife showed me how it was awesome knowing what was what and where the little guy was facing

based on the weight u've gained through out pregnancy and it's just an estimate, it isn't exact, and u should ask ur doctor if u wanna know for sure
