Besides what my friends have suggested here, if you are in Bangalore, visit Majestic area - opposite Bangalore City Rly Station - there are plenty of private bus operators offering various options, even competitive fares etc for journey to Ooty. The total travel time may take about 8 hours with one stop over. Most of the buses leave for Ooty in the late evening to reach there early next morning. Weather remains bearable, if not very good, in March-April in Ooty.
There are good local/nearby sight seeing spots. There is a lake in Ooty or tea plantations (Kothari) just at its outskirts, If time permits, you may take a full day trip to Madhumalai Wild life from Ooty. You can find plenty of good budget / economic hotels around the bus terminus in Ooty. March-April being not a busy time there, bargain a good deal for stay and other services.

Ooty is well connected by good roads. It is 535 km from Chennai (via Salem), 89 km from Coimbatore, 18 km from Coonoor (via Gudalur), 155 km from Mysore, 187 km from Calicut, 290 km from Bangalore, 281 km from Kochi (via Coimbatore and Palakkad), 236 km from Kodaikanal (via Coimbatore and Palani)
There is a regular bus service from Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Calicut, Kanyakumari, Thanjavur, Tirupathi and Cochin. Buses ply regularly to Mudhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Kotagiri, Coonoor and Doddabeta.
The Bangalore Kanyakumari Express (6526) leaves daily. For early risers, the Bangalore-Coimbatore Inter-City Express, another daily train, is a good bet.
