The series you are thinking of is "Are you afraid of the dark" it had the midnight society taking it in turns to tell spooky stories around the campfire and at the end put it out .

are you afraid of the dark!!!. it doesn't have "tales" in it, but they do sit around campfires and pour buckets of sand/water after the episode.
