Like if there was this high school student failing in school, he continually makes really bad choices in life, and he is not smarter than a 5th grader. He is a junkie, a bad person with a bad personality, and he drinks constantly. Yet, despite all of these aspects of that fool, people will usually say "he is actually really smart, he is just lazy" or something like that? Are they trying to shine light to that guy's status or do they actually believe that??

No matter who that person is and the things that person has done, people will always say that person is actually smart just !! Why?

It reminds me of the cliches at work. Most think the coworkers that gossip and are slackers are the 'cool' ones? I think they stick up for their own because it makes them seem "smart". They try to force friendships to fit in. They have no respect for someone who works hard and meets deadlines because it makes them look bad. Someone below the standard is one of them. Makes no sense, but 'birds of a feather flock together'. It reminds me of the other expression, 'no one is perfect'....but it shouldn't mean one stops striving or excelling. There is nothing 'smart' about addictions or being a jerk. I doubt they really believe this is smart or good, but more a matter of making them look empathetic.

I think jsut about everyone is at least somewhat smart. Laziness, procrastination, disinterest and other things just prevent many people from really acheiving their highest potential. Some people aren't that smart but have great jobs because they are able to challenge themselves and push ahead, while some smarties sit back on the couch and let opportunities to shine just fly past. Plus, it is a nice thing to say, common courtesy.

~In this particular circumstance, I would think they say he's smart so he doesn't get discouraged and maybe drop out? Maybe he really is smart, he just conceals it because being smart doesn't look cool?
Teachers can tell when someone is holding back, they just need to try harder.
Maybe he really is smart in certain areas?
Maybe others don't see him the same way you do?
Maybe people just don't want to "put him down?"
I'm sure it varies with every circumstance.~
