it's a natural thing for a young child to imagine things. it gauges both the left and the right brains with his ability and intellectual quotient. if he is that imaginative, he could be inclined in the arts in the near future. if it goes off the wall, it is a parent's prerogative to put a limit on them so that he knows and learns what is right and wrong. learning is all that a child could grasp. that way, you not only gain his trust and confidence, but you also get to know each other well..
if it goes beyond your expectation and it bothers you a lot, then try a child psychologist's advice.
best of luck!
EDITED: hey, you look like your on your 20's! awww...no fair.

You haven't said what it is that is disturbing you. Having a great imagination is, well, great! It sounds like this is more about the subject matter.
Ask your son where he gets the images from, what he and is friends watch or play, things like that. A lot of the imagery kids are seeing today is especially alarming taken out of context. You have to retrace their steps. If this doesn't explain things, maybe a children's councillor would be a gentle first step. Also consult your family doctor. If she or he sees your child and thinks there is a concern they can recommend them for assessment. You may have a local mental health clinic to.
Calm down and do your research Sherlock. I would go the gentle root first. As hard as it may be listen to him and really encourage him to talk to you more in depth. Something might connect the dots.
Do you have some support? Relative , friend , partner?
If you believe there is any danger to himself or you talk to your doctor right away and get him in to be assessed.
Good luck and try to stay calm.
Kids do take a lot from their environment. It's a crazy scary world right now! I see some interesting remarks here...a bit extreme perhaps. Major wishes for healing being sent out to you guys right now.
Moments like these are really what parenting is all about. The song lyrics LOVE, LOVE, LOVE...just popped into my head right now.
Sigh.

Steven King, Peter Jackson, Steven Spielburg and Spike Lee all use to have similar thoughts as children. Now they all make movies and are paid millions for having the same thoughts and projecting them on screen.
I say nurture it ... hire the dvd "the making of thriller" and guide him. Give him a camera and help him to put his thoughts on screen.
Having a vivid imagination is what children do and shouldnt be punished for it. This is usually a phase they go through.
However, should he act on these thoughts or become a danger to himself or others are grounds for psychiatric help.
Parent should always monitor their childs environment and be mindful what their children are being exposed to.

No matter how old we are, imagination is a good thing. The limitation of the mind is purely tyranny and if your son wants to be an imaginative person, that's just who he wants to be. People who imagine the weirdest things are the famous writers and the ones in movies. It's an inconveniant thing, but a good one. =D

Just to be on the safe side I would have him checked out by a psychologist, if it is worrying you that much.
