It was the Fab Five of the Michigan Wolverines in 1991-1992 who popularized the trend with baggy shorts (and black socks I might add). Technically it was the Arkansas Razorbacks who started it. It was Michigan's Assistant Coach Brian Dutcher that had seen the Arkansas Razorbacks wearing longer shorts and had been erked by the "sagging" that was going on (with jerseys coming untucked, which is an NCAA uniform violation). So he suggested it to the Wolverines, they tried it out and liked it. Later they went on to play in the National Championship in 1992 and 1993.....and through that exposure the trend was jump started.

As a Kentucky fan, I remember watching the Arkansas Razorbacks in the SEC in the 90's with the likes of Corliss Williamson wearing shorts clear down to his calves. And that was without sagging.

And even today the NCAA does not have a rule on the length of shorts. It's strictly a rule on the length of jerseys because of possible obstruction of the numbers on the jersey.

Jordan started it back in the day by sagging his short shorts. The trend somewhat caught on, and eventually shorts got longer and longer.

And in response to you refering to those shorts as "those long baggy things worn today", the NBA has a rule that a player's shorts have to be at least 1 inch ABOVE the knee cap. They're not that long.

MJ might have started it, but AI killed it by having them passed the shins and the league had to make a dress code after that!
