Urban Pop is not hip hop. NWA, Bone, Nas are urban pop. G-Unit, Joe Budden... urban pop. Someone brought up Sugar Hill Gang's lyrics. Sugar Hill Gang were not hip hop. They were bubblegum pop. Nothing but a boy band. One was a manager of the Cold Crush Brothers (who were hip hop), the lady from Sugar Hill Records heard him rapping a Cold Crush track, and decided to sign him. Battling has always been a part of hip hop. It was a way to prove who was better. Now, dis tracks are worthless nonsense. I grew up battling and ciphering, but now battling isn't valid as people write their rhymes before hand instead of freestyling them. Hip Hop is not dead. Media perceived hip hop should be though.

I wouldn't go all out and say that hip-hop is dead. The veterans of the game are still out there. However, most of them remain behind the scenes. Hip-hop is getting more commercialized these days. No longer is it about the music and being a conscious lyricalist such as Common, Mos Def, or Nas. These rappers are still doing their thing but are not are not as recognized as the fluff that is out there now like "Walk it out" or hip-hop songs that are drowned out by r&b singers. We ask ourselves what happened to the real hip-hop like Slick Rick, Kane, Rakim, Pac, Biggie who were about something and not about creating anthems about the their Iced out chains (e.g. Jibbs) or reppin' their hood. There are rappers like that on the come up such as Lil' Wayne, T.I. who have the potential to be up there with some of the greats but remain bounded by this new generation of so called hip-hop heads and their conventions. Real hip-hop, that nitty gritty ****, can be found in the underground scene on mixtapes and on the streets battleing it out lyrically. So, real hip-hop is out there and alive but the pulse is faint. Hip-hop is not dead but we're all watching it fade to black.

Of course I agree. Hip Hop is becoming something else. I will admit I do like the songs above but all the good stuff basically died. And the new is just worthless... =]]

Yes--and it's about damn time! Despite the over-hype seen in the "gangsta" mags and $$$ wasted on TV ads, the Rap/Hip-Hop sales figures for 2004-2005.....NOSE-DIVED big time.
You can bet the major record label execs took notice of that, too: the profits simply weren't there--and won't be anytime soon......which is why the ONLY way Rap/Hip-Hop remains a cataegory in the Grammys is by under-table payola from fading rap "stars".
Struggle as it surely will....Hip-Hop is on it's dying last breath.

if you are judging hip hop death as being due to lack of content take a minute to look at the CREATORS of hip hop. they werent saying much either. take the first hip hop song to bring rap to light. rappers delight. here are some lyrics:
"a hip hop, hibby to the hibby to the hip hip hop you dont stop a rockin to tha bang bang boogety beat....."
what is that saying? NADA!!! its just feel good music. like lean n rock. not meant for a statement. and as far as dissing goes that is a pillar of hip hop. do u not remember Bronx wars? krs one? ll cool j? they started dissing. it just evolved.
its idiotic yes, but a just a stage in evolution.
not death.
there is nothing new under the sun.

It was almost worthless then. Stop glorifying the 'hood. Nobody wants to live in a ghetto and just survive all day.
The '80s had the best music because it was either happy or made a good point.
