99.99 times out of 100 the mucus plug will be bloody. It is also thick, cloudy, gluggy and sticky - I know this sounds gross but it's "old mucus" - an accumulation of secretions throughout the pregnancy, to keep bacteria out of the uterus.

The reason it's usually bloody is because at the end of pregnancy, as your cervix thins, some blood is released into the cervix which gets caught up in the mucus and becomes bloodied. The capillaries in the lower uterus break down a bit due to the weight of the baby and can bleed slightly.

For a small percentage of patients, the mucus plug can be lost not as a plug but as a discharge that is continuous and sticky and stringy over several days. It is usually still bloody however.

Any non-bloody discharge that is heavier than usual late in the pregnancy should be investigated, especially if it's clear, as it could be amniotic fluid leakage.

if I were you I'd ask my caregiver for an exam just to be on the safe side.

The mucus plug doesn't have to look bloody. If you have alot of clear discharge that is slimy, that is your mucus plug. Congratulations! You don't have too much longer to go! Call your doctor to let them know.

No, it doesn't. Call your doctor and then go have your beautiful baby.
