The reason there are many synonyms for a word in English is that it is spoken by people that disagree on what a word means. There is no language police - people define the language based on how it is used.

English language has stolen words from numerous countries and adapted them into the 'norm'. French, Dutch, Irish, Roman, Greek it's all there, their, they're, if you really look.
I thought French was hard to learn in school but when you consider the variations in English with all of the different meanings the mind boggles as to how people from Non English Speaking Backgrounds learn English
