I need to find out if the Trooper has a vacuum modulator or is it something electrical that makes the trooper shift. It won't shift from first into second. It will get up to about 15 to 20 mph and the RPM's go high, but won't shift. I have 234,000 miles. I have a friend who works on cars and thought that there should be a vaccum modulator on this car that makes it shift, but he couldn't find it. I was wonder, for him to fix my car, what makes it shift? Where would it be located, if a vacuum modulator or being electrical? It has him very frustrated & ME, since I am the one with no running car. He looked thru my book, which is a Haynes Isuzu pick-ups & Trooper book #47020, and couldn't find anything related to the problem. My friend took it for a drive and saids that it doesn't feel like slipage at all. What would be causing it not to be shifting?? PLEASE HELP!!

My husband is a mechanic and he is stumped with what it can be but he really would have to look at it to know what the problem is. He said it an be a great number of things and it needs to be looked at by a Mechanic cause the Transmission is a tricky little devil that can either need to be replaced or need to be rebuilt. You can do this if you dont want to mess with it at all try looking up a pull apart place and get one for cheap or call around and find out how much it will cost to have a new or rebuilt given to you. he just told me that the book you have is not that one you need its a Chilton that will help you find what you need to find so go to a parts store and buy a Chilton book for your Trooper the people there can help you find it. Good Luck

i had the same problem with my bronco, automatic trannys relly on clutches, bands, tranny oil and a vaccum modulator to shift but if it was clutches or bands or tranny oil it would slipp so it sounds like the vaccum modulator which is what was worng with my bronco. the vaccum modulator is usally located around the tranny oil pan, just look in the engine compartment and look for a vaccum hose running from the engine down the chassis to the tranny, pretty much a looking game. it could even be a vaccum line fall off in the engine compartment or you have a vaccum leak in the line.

It may use a modulator, but you should be able to see a vacuum line running to it if it does.

Have you tried to start out in first and manually shift it into 2nd then drive?

Seems like your spark plugs are most likely corroded, or your distributor cap is bad, or that you have a bad spark plug wire, those are common causes, due to that your transmission is a automatic shfiting is done by 1,2,D, and OD but most likely it's that your not getting enough spark to burn the gasses..
