It began in Ancient Greece with the religious rituals dedicated to Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility. Then in middle ages, i mean after Christ, it was completely religious and it was performed in the church. It became seculiarized by the 15th century.

I imagine with children. Even today children act out stories even before they master language. I'd think it a precursor to verbal communication. Children that were able to act out imagined scenarios grew up to be adults who could act out actual situations and communicate those ideas to others.

Modern drama, then, the acting out of fictional or factual stories for entertainment, still serves a similar concept in communicating ideas and emotions, though on a structured level.

It would make sense to me, though, that what we call drama, today, entertainment, was once an evolutionary advantage in allowing us to communicate more effectively.
