If you don't know anyone else there, whoever invited you should introduce you to a person or two, and after that, you're on your own. If they don't do that, they are either rude or thoughtless.
But I'll bet you could still find someone to talk with, or a circle of talkers to break into. If you don't feel like doing that, fine - have some food and some drinks and go home.

For some reason a lot of people like to play games. I think if you feel you really don't belong or will feel un-comfortable going, politely decline the invite.
If by accident you end up in that situation, be cool and stay a short time and leave, at least you made an appearance.
And, last of all, shame on the hostess for not seeing to it that everyone they invited feels welcome.

Oh, you are seeing a problem where there is none.Just wade in and start chatting with the first and then the next person.Who knows you might even find a date in case you are single

I have gone to a couple of functions like that. It is weird to be the odd one out in a group like that. I usually don't stick around to long.

You seem to be open and interesting, I should think you that you would have no problem finding someone equally interesting to talk to. If not...take a walk outside and see what there is.

chill out it will come to you... thats what I do I dont make a sound and then all the sudden you an eye whitness to something that is out of this world .... and you drink (or anything else) alot and no one even says a word
