Every woman's experience is different. It's true, you will know. I also asked 'how would I know'. I can tell you what it felt like to me. It was an indescribable pain. It wasn't just in Any one place, it just hurt. Not like cramps but a whole new type of pain.

Ha ha, I was probably no help but that's what it felt like to me.

But, you'll know :) Good luck!

Okay labor is not a quiet thing. When you start labor the contractions will be there and you will notice them but they will annoy you more than anything. At this stage you need to just rest and eat. Finish packing if you need to. When you get into active labor YOU WILL KNOW!!!!! There will be no question at all that you are in labor. The contractions will make you stop in your tracks and you will HAVE to breath through them. Depending on how you take pain they may even make you cry. You need to go to the hospital when this happens. Don't worry though, after it is all over you won't even think about labor.

Going into labor feels like starting your period. If you experienced cramps in your lower abdomen (stomach) and your back ached during your menstrual cycle, then you should experience similar symptoms during the start of labor. Braxton-Hicks contractions are NOT real labor and they don't feel like real labor! You will know when you really get into active labor, because you have to stop EVERYTHING when you have a contraction. It just takes over your body and you have to do your breathing exercises to get past it.
My first labor experience woke me up at 4:18 a.m. and started getting serious by 8:00 a.m. Second time was MUCH easier. Good luck!

For some people, they have that mucous plug thing, but I never did. I did not have back pains either. My whole entire pregnant belly would get rock hard with contractions. It just felt like a giant period cramp, and like my whole entire body was drawn up into my stomach. My contractions came at regular time intervals, every 15 mins. Also, (ahem) diarreah and nauseah, too.

My contractions woke me up out of my sleep. That's how I knew. Listen to your body, your body will know. You will just instinctively know.

For every woman this is different.I was 7 weeks early when my waters started to break. The only tip I can give you is listen to your body, we have a instinct that takes over during labor.Trust your body and your midwife and everything will be just fine. The pains I had were very painful, but the result of a healthy baby boy was worth it

Trust me when you are in labor you will surely know it. No 2 labors are alike, I had no back pains or any of the other signs associated with labor. You will know, it is nature.

At first it feels like bad period pains. Most of the pain is in the lower back.

Tip: In early labor a hot shower really helps. Have the water on your lower back.

For me it was like a really bad period pain but I could feel the contraction actually pulling the cervix. This continued until my waters broke!

Some people (like me) had only a mild cramping feeling, but the second time it hurt so badly I was climbing the wall.

Basically, it feels like a bad case of menstrual cramps, and lots of pressure.
