U.S. and Soviet Union were both stockpiling Nuclear weapons because both countries were afraid the other one was going to drop a nuclear bomb. Neither country trusted each other and pretty much thought the other country was evil.

Ok, I'm just NOT that old. The Cold War is just not that far away in history.

The Soviet Union Vs. the United States of America with various other countries voicing in at times. All sides building up as many highly explosive toys as they can afford. The Korean War. Viet Nam. The more nuclear reactive material the better. Joseph McCarthey. The Rosenbergs. Communist China. Mutually assured destruction. Space exploration, moon landing (something good did actually come of it!). Bay of Pigs. Gorbachev.

Better yet, listen and check out the lyrics to "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel then check out each and every thing he references on Wikipedia.

It's a sad thing when pop culture may have more to say about history than our history teachers seem to.

And I am so very much not old enough to be feeling this way (though I'm happy to accept being old enough to think that a pretty cool song in a Britney Speares/Marilyn Manson age)!

After WWII, the US hoped to spread democracy while the USSR hoped to spread the Communist revolution. This brought them into conflict through proxies (therefore not a "hot" war) in Central America, Europe, Southeast Asia and elsewhere. Notable incidents include the Sputnik launch, U2 spy plane incident, the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam War.

The eventual result was the USSR collapsed and the US won. Reasons include economic dominance (including the arms race) and revolts in countries such as Poland, a satellite country to the USSR, which were supported by the US and Catholic Church.

R U serious.... What are they not teaching in school....
Cold war Powers:
NATO
(US Canada UK Greenland France Germany Turkey just naming a few)
Warsaw Pact
USSR (Kazakhstan Chec Republic)
It was to stop communism, and promote democracy.
Times got dicey, with MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) Is the soviets launched missals/Bombers at us our Boomer fleet (SSBN Submarine, Ballistic Nuclear) would counter the attack. along w/ SAC (Strategic Air Command) the B52 out of Whitman, and NORAD the NATO instillation's along the E/W coast and Iceland.
There is also a SOSUS link between Novascosa to Iceland to Greenland to England that would detect any sub/surface vestals attempting to leave Warsaw ports (Such as Murmansk). In the end we out produced Ivan and when we started deploring SDI,Ivan went belly up There is a tone more info on it that I've written here. Very interesting stuff...
