If you work in the state of Ohio, our minimum wage is at $6.85. So ANY position that you get in Ohio MUST pay you at least this much per hour. Most other states are still at $5.85. At full time, 40 hours per week, you will get $274 a week, which is $14,248 per year. For any job, you should consider that the IRS will take taxes and other deductions, but I don't know how tax laws work for people with a Visa. The worst they could take is probably about 19-20%, so you'd bring home about $219 a week or so.

Also, minimum wage is definitely livable, it just depends on where you live. If you live in a big city, you won't be able to have a place to live near your job. That means that you'll probably have to drive about an hour or more to work and back, which is going to cost you considerably in gas or bus fare. Usually, though, big cities pay way more than minimum wage. For example, I live in a small town where there are plenty of minimum wage jobs because the cost of living is sooooooo cheap. I could drive an hour and half to Pittsburgh everyday and make about $9.00 or $10.00 an hour for the same exact job.

states have different minumum wages, as for federal minimum wage:

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 on 10 January 2007 and the U.S. Senate passed its version on 1 February 2007, calling for a gradual increase in the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour by 11 March 2009. (The two bills must be reconciled in committees before being sent to the President.) If signed by President Bush, the first increase will take place 11 March 2007, to $5.85

gagan,

That would depend on what kind of job you get, whether or not you have experience, and the city you're thinking about moving to.

Folks would be able to provide better answers if you would provide more information.
