fought from 1914-1918.

Main cause was most nations in Europe had mutual defense pacts with other nations. So when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Serbian, the Austrians invaded in reply which led to a domino effect of treaty obligations. Eventually every major country in Europe was involved. The US entered later. The war saw some important changes to warfare. Artillery control and useage was refined, Tanks were first developed and used, and aircraft were first used in combat as well as unrestricted submarine warfare.

The war ended in victory for the allied powers. (England, France, USA.) (italy switched to the allied side part way through.)

The other side was predominantly Germany, plus Austria, and the turkish empire.

War ended with the Treaty of Versaille, signed on November 11, 1918. Which also included massive war reparations to be paid to the victors.
