ok- I have the garlic head (whole) in the dirt- its growing like crazy...where do I go from here? Let the dprouts get really high, then pull out? And if I do that, how do I get more garlic, short of just putting more cloves in the dirt? Reproduction sounds not likely this way...LOL

like already stated break head of garlic into individual cloves. plant pointy end up in rows. put them 4 in. apart and 1 foot in between rows. when central stalk shows a bud i cut my central stalk off so the bulb grows more and not the central flower. when leaves are almost all brown dig them up and hang them in a bunch in a cool dry place...plant three in. deep by the way...

First you need to separate the cloves. Plant only the largest ones, about 4 to 5 inches apart. About 8 of the whole head. Plant with about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of soil on them. Water as you would with any other plant. When half of the leaves have turned brown, pull one up and try it. If it's good pull the rest, tie them together and hang them to dry. If it is still small, let it grow a little more. Garlic, if left to long in the ground, will start to lose it's flavor. Until you've grown it a couple of years, it is a bit of a hit and miss operation.

Well first of off garlic does not grow very well indoors..the proper way to grow garlic is to get a whole clove and take it all apart in sections like an orange..then take those parts and put them atleast 2 to 3 inches in the ground ..but it has to be done in the fall in order to harvest the next year..I'm not sure if you are going to get any cloves growing indoors.you may end up with nice green strands with a kind of flower bush on the tope something like chives..i really don't know what to say about the indoor growing ..sorry

When you plant garlic you only need to plant one clove. It will grow into more. Sounds like you are doing something right. Planted a three of inches apart and at least 1 inch deep. When the tops fall over it is time to harvest. Clean off the roots and the tops and let them dry.

Separate the head of garlic, plant cloves individually. When they bloom leave the leaves to nourish the clove - this is the stage where new/more cloves develope. (Like other bulbs.) When the foliage turns brown is the harvest signal. You should have heads of garlic from the single clove. It prefers full sun.
