after I take the MSF course and get my license, I want to get a bike. the 250R seems too small. Any suggestions?

go with the ninja 250 i had one last season
great bike top out 170Km great bike, very reliable, cheap cheap on gas and insurance

No that is actually a fairly nice choice also the Suzuki SV650 is a perennial good option. Also the Yamaha FZ6 and YZF-600R. The FZ and SV models have half fairing options available if the naked look doesn't do it for you. A 500 to 700 cc bike is a fine choice for a new rider, try to stay away from the 600cc repli-racers though. A little much for everyday street use. The Honda 599 is another option but a little more performance oriented than the others.
Of course perhaps the best option is a bike along these lines but a few years older; cheaper, more accessories, and less of a heartbreak when you lay it down, which you are guaranteed to do.

I think it's a bit big. I know you were probably using Rebel 250s in the MSF course, the Ninja will be a great deal faster than some 10-15+ yr old basic or cruiser.

well the 650 ninja in my opinion is going to be alot of bike for a beginner. I own a 250R and its has plenty of power for that sized bike.Riding above 80 isn't comfortable over long distances but it will easily reach 120. Skipping the middle step would be nice but if are going to lay down your fist bike you would want it to be this one.

I think it is better to learn well, years of practice, before getting a fast bike. You should learn cornering and braking really well before going for a fast bike.

No the ninja 650R is lame, it doesn't make anywhere near the power of a 600cc inline 4.... it's just a parrallel twin, like the EX500, only slightly larger.... it's lame.

That depends upon quite a few different factors, not the least being your experience on two wheels. And remember the speed is governed by your right hand holding the throttle.
