The doctor told me to take a half to one whole tablet at night before bed to help me sleep, but I took half a tablet last night and it literally kept me up all night. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there something out there stronger that I can take?

Trazodone does not work for me at all. I was told when you get the opposite effect it is an allergic reaction. I have tried many things to help me sleep. The best is 2-3 benedryl an hour before bed, a hot bath and a good book. You will sleep like a baby. Good luck.

Trazodone was prescribed to me several years ago and I had a rough time with it. I had a sleep disorder (still do but it is not as severe now) and needed help not only getting to sleep but staying asleep. Trazodone worked as far as getting to sleep. However, I kept waking up realizing that I hadn't been breathing for a while. It was often difficult and painful to take a fist breath upon waking. One time, I literally jumped up and started running in place in order to force myself to breathe. It really scared me. I went back to the doctor and was put on Elavil. That worked a lot better. I no longer had trouble with the scary not-breathing problem. However, Elavil made my mouth extremely dry and dilated my eyes to the point that it was painful to go out on a sunny day without extremely dark sunglasses. Two years later, I asked to get help in weaning myself from Elavil and I eventually got off of all drugs of that nature. The drugs did their job and I am a firm believer that they can help. However, once you are able to go back to living without them, I strongly advise that you do so. I still have trouble sleeping the night through but I sleep for longer periods at a time. It is great being back to a drug free life. Hope this helps!

I have taken trazodone to sleep for many years and have never experienced it keeping me up although it doesn't always work. There are other drugs out there..... you want one that is not habit forming and that gets out of your system quickly so you don't experience a "drugged" feeling the next day. I can't vouch for it but there's Ambien CR and a brand new drug out that supposedly is OK long term and no side effects.

i had to take trazadone at rehab and after and it would put me to sleep but...i would wkae up after only like 2 or 3 hrs and couldn't get back to sleep. it's not meant to be a sleeping pill exactly- it's meant to relax you to where u can fell sleepy. but i didn't like it either. the only ones that are gonna really work for you are gonna all be types that have potential to be habit-forming (a.k.a. "the good-ones" lol!) and they leave you groggy usually. but good luck on finding one! let me know when u do---i need one too! :)

Yeah and it sucked the best thing to do is try another med. Seroquel knocked me out but it I would wake up groggy. It's all trial and error so keep trying until you find the right med for you.

Maybe you should start taking it in the morning. Wait for a weekend when you don't have to go to work or school. Skip Friday pm's dosage & take it Sat. am. See how that works out. And, as always, when in doubt, ask your doctor.
