Our reaction to a long answer or question equates with the amount of time is takes to form an opinion of someone new.

Similarly, any knee jerk reaction is based on outward appearances and our own pre-conceived beliefs.

Therefore yes, as we are in an instant click and go culture on here, we may give the thumbs down because of negative (long) outward appearances and be swayed very quickly about the content, based on our own pre-conceived beliefs.

Well, it depends. If the subject matter is interesting to me I might read it and ponder it a little bit. Of course if I'm in a hurry and have to go to the bathroom or something, I just go on to the next answer. Of course, I hardly ever rate anybody elses answers because it takes too much time altogether. Anyway it would have to be a real irritating answer to be a thumbs down because I try to respect other peoples opinions. Which is really hard to do these days because of the attitudes of the new generation who never really had to work for anything they have and expect everything should be given to them or just fall into their laps. Is this too long yet?

So, how about you? Do you give a thumbs down for a long answer?

Maybe I will get a few for this one, I could go on but I think thats about enough!

I tend to reserve my thumbs down for people who truly deserve it. Like people that don't actually answer the question that they think they've answered, just to get the points. I realize this isn't nuclear physics on here, but I believe a lot of people actually enjoy interacting with and learning from other people's points of view. So, no I don't usually give a thumbs down for long-winded answers.

No, once in awhile its a question that can't be answered in just a sentence or two. I have found some long answer's to be very beneficial. I have also seen some long answers to be pretty much just going on and on and on, not saying a whole lot. Only then is it thumbs down.

No, I always read through them first and if it isn't something that will help the asker I give it a thumbs down. Only if it's really bad though, I think giving thumbs down is a bit immature so I try to avoid doing it..

No, some long answers are very good. I only do "thumbs down" for truly mean-spirited answers, and I see very few of those.
